Product Reveiws for Psoriasis Treatment creams

Products such as the creams shown above are generally for mild outbreaks of psoriasis. If you are experiencing a more severe outbreak of symptoms these creams may not work well for you. They are designed mainly to reduce the itching and irratation that results from mild outbreaks. They are not suitable if your symptoms include open sores or lesions. In the case of a severe outbreak it is best to consult a doctor and follow their directions. Psoriasis treatment is not an exact science.

One of the main types of Psoriasis Treatment is:

Topical treatments:

Topical corticosteroids: this is a prescription ointment. It can be prescribed in varying strengths depending on where you are supposed to use it and the severity of your psoriasis. The problem with this type of treatment is that prolonged use of this ointment can actually thin your skin; you can also build up immunity to this treatment making it less effective for you. Normally your physician will recommend that you only use this ointment during an outbreak of symptoms. Once the outbreak is under control, they should recommend other treatment methods.

Vitamin D analogues: Again this is a prescription cream that features a synthetic form of vitamin D. However, these prescriptions can be expensive and in some cases have been known to irritate the skin. Not the best choice for a condition that already results in irritated skin as a symptom.

Anthralin: This medication is believed (notice they do not say proven) to normalize DNA activity in the skin cells. This is supposed to help reduce scaling and promote smoother skin. Problems with this type of product; it can cause skin irritation; it also stains everything it comes in contact with. This includes your skin, clothing, countertops, and bedding.

Topical retinoids: one form of this is tazarotene which was developed specifically for psoriasis suffers. This is also a synthetic version of Vitamin A. Common side effects of this product are; skin irritation, sensitivity to sunlight, and the risk of birth defects. Not recommended if you are or think you may be pregnant!

Are you noticing a trend here?

One thing all these prescription lotions, ointments, and creams seem to have in common is skin irritation. How does that even make sense when psoriasis symptoms present with irritated and inflamed skin to begin with? This may be one of the main reasons that psoriasis suffers have turned to more gentle home remedies for their psoriasis outbreaks.

Some products to consider if you are suffering from psoriasis breakouts:

moisturizing creamAlways, always, use a moisturizer after bathing. This is too important not to stress it. One of the treatments often recommended for psoriasis is soaking in lukewarm water to help remove the plaque buildup on your skin. The problem with this is that prolonged or repeated bathing can also strip natural oils from your body causing your skin to dry out. So never, ever, bathe without applying a moisturizer immediately afterwards. This is not a step you should ever skip. Some recommended moisturizers are; Aquaphor, Eucerin, and Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream. Less expensive alternatives that you may have around the house are vegetable oils, lard, or petroleum jelly will also work as moisturizers.

You will also want to be extremely careful when you are choosing the types of soap you bathe with. You will want to use a “superfatted” soap or one with moisturizers added. Some recommended soaps are; Basis, Purpose, Alpha Keri , Oilatum, and Nivea Cream Bar . Alternatively, you may want to try a soap free cleansing product such as; Lowilla Cake,  pHisoDerm Dry Skin Formula, or Aveeno Cleansing Bar.
